In an electrifying showdown at the Capital Football Arena on Friday, May 24,
2024, Minerva Academy FC showcased unparalleled resilience and skill, securing
the AIFF Sub Junior League 2023-24 title in a dramatic second-half comeback.
Trailing 0-2 against Bengaluru FC in the first half, Minerva Academy FC surged
back to clinch a 7-4 victory, leaving fans in awe of their tenacity and talent.
The Game Changers: Denamoni and Azam Khan
Key to Minerva's stunning turnaround were the remarkable performances of
Konthoujam Denamoni and Mohammed Azam Khan, each netting a hat-trick. Their
offensive prowess was complemented by Wankheirakpam Punshiba Meetei, who
confidently converted a penalty. These players were instrumental in reversing
the game's momentum, transforming what seemed like an inevitable defeat into an
exhilarating triumph.
Bengaluru FC started strong, with goals from Mohammad Sohil Khan, CH Sakip,
Yajas Nilesh Bafna, and Akash Mondal. Sohil Khan opened the scoring in the 12th
minute with a cleverly executed free-kick. CH Sakip doubled the lead in the
21st minute with a quick turn and precise shot inside the box, putting Minerva
on the back foot early in the match.
The Epic Comeback
Despite being 3-1 down in the 34th minute, Minerva Academy FC launched a
vigorous comeback after halftime. Within 30 seconds of the restart, Konthoujam
Denamoni narrowed the gap with a deft finish from a well-placed cross. The
final 12 minutes were a flurry of action, with Minerva netting six goals in
rapid succession.
Mohammed Azam Khan's two goals in as many minutes brought Minerva level at
3-3. Denamoni then completed his hat-trick with goals in the 41st and 45th
minutes, giving Minerva their first lead of the match. The team's relentless
offensive onslaught continued, with two additional goals in the closing moments
sealing their victory.
Bengaluru FC's Akash Mondal made a valiant effort to turn the tide with a
powerful left-footed strike from inside the box, but it wasn't enough to
counter Minerva's dominance. Under the astute guidance of coach Vineet Kumar
Kantiwal, Minerva Academy FC's late surge overwhelmed their opponents, securing
a memorable victory and the prestigious title.
